Exploration of the night sky become become an increasingly popular hobby, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. If you are a beginner looking to delve into the wonders of the universe, then purchasing the right telescope is crucial. There are a lot of "hobby killer" telescopes in the market. Here I will review the best all-round telescope that combines astrophotography capabilities with visual capabilities.
The Sky-Watcher Startravel 102T OTA - £230
The Sky-Watcher Star Travel 102 is an excellent choice for beginner astronomers seeking a compact and portable telescope that is easy to use. With its 102mm aperture & focal length of 500mm, this refractor is ideal for capturing stunning deep-sky objects. Although capable of astrophotography, this telescope is Achromatic which means you may notice chromatic aberration (fringing) with long exposure. This can be edited out in post processing or you can purchase a fringe killer filter. Chromatic aberration is not as noticeable during visual observing. (GOTO mount recommended for astrophotography)
Sky-Watcher Skymax 127 OTA - £330
If you are more interested in Planetary observation, then a Maksutov Telescope such as the Sky-watcher Skymax 127 is the one to go for. This Telescope has a focal length of 1500mm which provides stunning views of Saturn's icy rings and even the Polar caps on Mars. for Planetary astrophotography, just stick a planetary camera into the eyepiece holder and take stunning images of our solar system. (GOTO mount recommended. Check my review on the AZ-GTI here)
Sky-Watcher Explorer 130P-DS OTA - £239
Reflector telescopes are generally cheaper than Refractors and Maksutov telescopes. The only downsides to them is they are heavier and need larger mounts to sit on. They also require frequent collimation. The Skywatcher Explorer 130P-DS is great for both Planetary and deep sky observing and can also be used for astrophotography. (When purchasing a GOTO mount and Coma Corrector)
Conclusion
Selecting the best all-round telescope for astrophotography and visual exploration depends on your specific needs and preferences. These Sky-watcher telescopes are all exceptional choices that offer a blend of astrophotography capabilities and an immersive visual experience. Remember to consider factors such as aperture size, mount type, and ease of use when making your decision. Whichever telescope you choose, may it open up a world of wonder and discovery as you explore the vastness of the universe. Happy stargazing!
